Deepak: The Happiness Guru?

July 21, 2008

Undoubtedly, we live in trying times: a war in Iraq, a tubing economy, energy woes left and right, and a crumbling spiritual infrastructure. Seeking consolation, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart tracked down bestselling author and Virgin Comics’ Chief Visionary, Deepak Chopra, for words of wisdom. After recently duking it out with Guru Pitka of The Love Guru, Deepak goes toe-to-toe with happiness guru, J.P. “Gus” Godsey, author of “How to Be Happy Everyday”. It’s the mythological and spiritual teachings of the past versus ice cream trucks… what makes you happy?

Deepak versus Pitka

June 5, 2008

Who knew Enlightenment could be so divisive? Guru Pitka has been called a poor man’s Deepak, a sham, an impostor who makes a mockery of Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism, and most “isms” in general. Now, he is calling out Virgin Comics’ very own guru, Deepak Chopra, in an online popularity contest. Although we at Virgin Comics personally feel that Deepak and Pitka are really one in the same, both part of the absolute universe, we’d still like to know: Who do you love? Vote here.

“Religion in Comics” Panel with INDIA AUTHENTIC Writer Saurav Mohapatra

March 24, 2008

Saurav Mohapatra, writer of Deepak Chopra’s India Authentic, will be part of a panel at Boston University on 4/13 to discuss religion in comics.

As its planners prepare the weekend-long schedule of scholarly presenters, the “Graven Images: Religion in Comic Books & Graphic Novels” conference already has a number of top comic book creators coming to Boston University next month. On Sunday, April 13th, conference attendees will get to take part in a Creator Q&A with Saurav Mohapatra (India Authentic), Steve Ross (Marked!), Archaia Studios Press publisher Mark Smylie (Artesia Besieged), and G. Willow Wilson (Cairo).

The five panelists, representing a wide variety of faiths and works, will join conference co-chair A. David Lewis (The Lone and Level Sands, Some New Kind of Slaughter) in an open discussion of religion, creativity, and the comic book medium. “I’m delighted not only that they’ve all accepted our invitation,” says Lewis, “but that they also represent a wonderful cross-section of spiritualities. They nicely embody the diversity we are eager to explore in the medium with ‘Graven Images.’”
