Have We Found Virgin’s #1 Fan?

July 9, 2008

Adam McGovern of ComicCritique.blog may be in contention for Virgin Comics’ number one fan. This comics connoisseur recently posted an article describing his favorite Virgin Comics titles and how they have evolved the medium. Here’s what he had to say about some of our more recent titles:

Deepak Chopra’s Buddha

BUDDHA is the ambitious adaptation of Chopra’s novel on the legendary holy man, and is one of the best comics being produced today. The eloquent script adaptation by Joshua Dysart encapsulates crystalline truths with zero smugness, and the otherworldly (and, by turns, all-too-worldly) art by Harshvardhan Kadam is a rare achievement of sensory wonder without empty spectacle.

Beyond

BEYOND, conceived by Chopra, written by Ron Marz and drawn by Edison George, is a contemporary thriller with BOURNE-style suspense but a subtext of uneasy global-trade relationships between American industry and an India balanced between ancient spiritual understandings and emerging material opportunities. Chopra’s concept of a topical yet page-turning tale is as strong here as his soul & sorcery balance is in BUDDHA, and Marz’s ear for extraordinary tensions among everyday people is keen, with intricate yet energized art from George.

Project: Kalki

There’s a grand, depressive poetry to Arjun Gaind’s writing, and artist Vivek Shinde is set to join John Paul Leon and Paul Azaceta in the pantheon of meaningful, moody gloom. The book details the probable end of the world, but there’s now one more good reason to hope it doesn’t happen too soon.

Dan Dare

DAN DARE may be the first fully Obama-era comic, with establishment believers fighting to restore competence and common sense from the feckless usurpers they look so much better than. People marvel at the restraint and honor of this comic given writer Garth Ennis’ often squalid oeuvre, but, after brilliantly cataloguing how bad we can be and how wrong things can go, he’s tackling the even tougher terrain of envisioning what just rule might look like.

Jonathan Mostow Q&A on The Megas

March 4, 2008

Check out the Wizard interview with Jonathan Mostow (director of Terminator 3 and U-571) on his latest creation with Virgin Comics, The Megas. You can read the issue #1 widescreen digital comic or buy your copy here. New digital comic chapters added Mondays and Wednesdays.

Do you think that by making a group of people about five to 10 percent better that you’ve created a “master race?”

It is a master race. That’s a good way of putting it. They are better in their minds so it does make sense that they’re on top. It’s a social contract that the rest of the public has agreed to accept. The fact is that in our lives today, we accept that George Clooney and Julia Roberts are just more fabulous than we’ll ever be. We don’t think, “We deserve to be on the cover of People magazine,” or, “We deserve to be guests on the Jay Leno show,” or, “We deserve to have articles written about us.” We just accept we’re just not as fabulous as they are. So we basically go to our job bagging groceries at the local supermarket and accept that that’s our lot in life. Our image of ourselves is that we’re just normal people and we accept that the world is run by people more—somehow—capable or wonderful or special than we are. So the quiet masses essentially don’t revolt and overthrow this monarchy because they accept on some level that the royal class is kind of better than themselves. There’s this Dada movement that feels differently and that becomes a plot element in this series.

Jonathan Mostow talks “The Megas”

February 28, 2008

Jonathan Mostow, director of Terminator 3 and U-571, talks about his latest creation for Virgin Comics’ Director’s Cut line, The Megas.

“The great thing about the graphic novel medium is you can draw it. I can sit there and try to explain it to you, but when you see the image I think it has a kind of certain power to that image,” Mostow says. “I get to communicate what’s cool about the idea and compelling about the idea in a way that’s more compelling than writing about it or a phone call with me talking about it.”

That was especially key when the underlying concept is as abstract as it is in “The Megas.” “The idea is an intellectual idea and if you start to explain it people think it sounds like a thought experiment from some eighth-grade social studies class,” he says. “But if you draw it, if you see the White House re-envisioned as a palace, and you see these iconic architectural archetypes like the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument re-imagined as trappings and symbols of power of a monarchy, there’s some thing very compelling about those images that I think can create an emotional feeling the viewer or reader.”
